Amber Noland + Link Contemporary Art Presents:
ASAD FAULWELL
Opening January 17, 2009 6pm-8pm. You are cordially invited to an exhibition of new work by Asad Faulwell. Faulwell's recent works weave together collage, painting, and text to express religious and political conflicts in the Middle East. The juxtaposition of decorative patterning with black and white figures create a composition embedded with tradition and history but charged with contemporary issues. Faulwell is a 2008 Joan Mitchell Foundation grant winner and was recently nominated for the Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize, the first international prize for contemporary Iranian art. Coagula #96 COVER STORY: Asad Faulwell, the Coagula Interview ARTSCENE Feburary 2009 Continued and Recommended Exhibtions: Asad Faulwell paints decorative, floral arabesques reminiscent of Islamic textiles, manuscripts and ceramics, which serve as the armature for cut-out black and white press photos of key figures within the turbulent social and political history of the Middle East. In addition to such public figures as Sadat (Egypt), King Abduall (Jordan), Faulwell creates homages to three less public women bombers who fought in the Battle of Algiers. The brightly colored surface designs are seductive and sensuous, creating a tension between the insistence of the political figures and historical events. The results are both pleasing and provocative (Link Contemporary Art, Claremont). |
